Graphic Design Job Description

Bluestone Health Team: Product & Design Team

Reports To: Director of Product

Employment Type: Full-Time, Remote Position

About Bluestone Health

Bluestone Health is committed to delivering compassionate, high-quality care to the tribal communities we serve.

Position Summary

Bluestone Health is hiring a Graphic Designer to own the design and production of patient-facing educational materials, client-facing reports and presentations, and patient/client newsletters. This is first and foremost a design craft role: strong typography, layout, and brand-execution skills are the core requirement.

The designer will take ownership of Bluestone's existing design governance artifacts — brand style guide, print collateral governance standard, "say/don't say" language guide, and pre-publish audit checklist — and is expected to evolve them as the material library and channels expand.

Key Responsibilities
Production
  • Design and produce patient-facing educational materials (handouts, flyers, one-pagers) in compliance with Bluestone's accessibility and plain-language standards.
  • Design and produce client-facing materials, including quarterly/annual reports and presentation decks.
  • Own the design and production of client-facing and patient-facing presentations.
  • Work from structured intake tickets (clinician- or stakeholder-submitted briefs) rather than open-ended creative direction; flag incomplete or ambiguous briefs back to the requester.
  • Own end-to-end design and production of recurring patient and client newsletters, including layout, visual hierarchy, and coordination with content owners.
Design Process
  • Design and refine materials, applying strong fundamentals in typography, layout, and visual hierarchy.
  • Use AI tools selectively for idea generation, concepting, or first-pass drafts where useful — not as the default starting point for every deliverable.
  • Apply independent design judgment to determine when AI input is useful versus when to design manually from the brief.
Brand & Standards Ownership
  • Own and evolve Bluestone's brand style guide, print collateral governance standard, and "say/don't say" language guide as new material types and channels are added.
  • Run every external-facing deliverable through the pre-publish audit checklist prior to release; own and refine the checklist itself over time.
  • Maintain typography and visual consistency across materials.
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum 3 years of professional graphic design experience.
  • Portfolio demonstrating consumer-facing design.
  • Working fluency with Adobe InDesign, for longer multi-page documents (benefit guides, client reports) and print-vendor handoff.
  • Demonstrated fluency in Figma, including component libraries and design systems (not just visual editing).
  • Working proficiency with Canva.
  • Comfortable operating within a defined brand system and a documented approval/audit process, rather than working without guardrails.
  • Comfortable incorporating AI tools (e.g., Claude) into the design process for idea generation and drafting support, with the judgment to know when to use them versus work manually.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in healthcare, health plan, or regulated-industry communications (e.g., EOBs, benefit guides, patient education materials).
  • Working knowledge of accessibility standards for print and digital health materials (e.g., WCAG 2.1 AA contrast and text-size principles). Not required at hire.
  • Experience building or maintaining a brand governance system from the ground up, rather than only executing against one already built by someone else.
  • Familiarity with Brevo and/or Omnisend, or comfort learning them quickly — used for newsletter deployment.
Work Sample Test

Paid, time-boxed take-home exercise: $200 flat fee for 4 hours.

Candidates will complete a paid work sample exercise as part of the interview process. Full instructions will be provided separately.

Performance expectations, turnaround targets, and review cadence will be defined during onboarding.

How to Apply

Qualified candidates should submit their resume and sample work via this application.
